Of Italian descent, Alito grew up in New Jersey and earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his law degree from Yale Law School.Career
After graduating from law school, Alito worked as a law clerk for Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist. He then practiced law for several years before being appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit by President George H.W. Bush. In 2006, Alito was nominated by President George W. Bush to the Supreme Court and was confirmed by a 58-42 vote.Alito is considered a conservative jurist and has generally voted with the other conservative justices on the Court. He has been a consistent advocate for limited government, states' rights, and judicial restraint. Alito is also a staunch defender of the Second Amendment and has authored several opinions protecting gun rights.
